Ketosis – Valentine’s Day 10

Yesterday was Valentine’s day, and my wife and I had big plans for a delicious dinner. Here it is, just prior to eating:

Yes, those steaks are very nearly as big as the dinner plates they’re sitting on. We got them from Snow Creek Ranch, our humane beef supplier. They are seriously amazing. I’m a bit of a grillmaster, if I do say so myself, and these turned out beautifully. I ate all of my steak and almost all of my giant dinosaur asparagus, and Jenna made a seriously impressive dent in hers, as well.

I did have a gluten-free cupcake after dinner, too. It was from Gluten Escape, a new gluten free bakery near my office. It had a different sort of flavor to it, and I’m not sure if it’s due to nut flour or something. It certainly wasn’t bad, it just tasted like more than “sweet and processed” like I remember cupcakes tasting, so it was worth noting. It’s my first overt cheat since starting my keto gig, but it doesn’t seem to have affected my progress at all. My pee stick this morning was as high as it’s ever been, and I’m seeing new bits of increased definition daily. It’s happening quickly enough that I’m actually noticing the changes as they occur, which is rare for me. Usually, I don’t really notice them until after the majority have already occurred and now my pants are huge. Also exciting: This morning, for the first time in my life that I can remember, I can feel the outlines of my individual ab muscles. I can’t see them yet by any means, but there’s finally so little between them and the world that I can feel them. It’s probably not exciting for anyone but me, but whatever. I think it’s cool.

How to Keep Feces Out of Your Bloodstream – Bit of an eye-catching title, eh? Tim Ferriss does know his marketing. Anyway, this is a preview section of Robb Wolf’s book from back in the day. I’m not certain, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time I was exposed to the concept of the paleo diet, and it really got me thinking. So now, you can enjoy it right along with me. See how cool that is?

The Porn You Eat – Another provocative title. Also a really interesting take on refined foods. I probably never would have thought of it this way, but it’s a pretty fair comparison when you think about it.

What are the effects of aspartame, stevia and other sugar substitutes? – Dr. Attia again makes some excellent points about sweeteners. People often think that “real sugar” is less detrimental to health than artificial sweeteners. But once you realize just how damaging refined fructose/glucose combos can be to your body, does that make sense anymore? He says no, and I’m inclined to agree. If I’m going to use a caloric sweetener, it’s going to be honey or maple syrup, as raw and unprocessed as I can get it. I’m sure I’ll still have the odd bakery cupcake, but I’m trying very hard to remove all refined sugars from my diet, even for cheats. There’s no reason I can’t get a lot of my sweet tastes from stevia, and enjoy some actual health benefits from it.
